Sheela Plays Chess
Weaving narratives from myths and legends with historical imagery, I explore how we express and influence cultural attitudes towards contemporary women and marginalized figures. This work examines the impact of gender politics, identity, and body image on womxn, particularly in the context of societal gatekeeping. Gatekeeping excludes or controls individuals or communities within a broader community, hindering their participation in discussions, access to spaces, or the expression of their identity.

I admire the strong women of Greek mythology, envisioning them as modern-day protagonists who confront those seeking to exclude womxn. These heroes become protectors of women's rights, employing various strategies against gatekeepers.

These protagonists might engage in strategic battles, akin to chess, or utilize alternative approaches historically employed by Sheela na Gigs. Sheela na Gigs, derived from the Ancient Greek word "anasyrma" meaning "lifting the skirt," is a gesture found in many cultures throughout history.

This gesture, often associated with female exhibitionism, is not intended for arousal but serves as an apotropaic device, warding off evil or frightening the enemy. It also evokes surprise, laughter, and emotional release, serving as a symbol and tool for healing. In this particular work, the protagonist is strategically fighting the gatekeepers.
Metaphorically speaking, she is mustering or creating a gathering space for those who are fighting against societal injustices
